Adult Basic Education & High School Equivalency

Adult Basic Education (ABE) is offered in locations throughout Hunterdon and Somerset counties. The goal of ABE is to provide adults with educational opportunities to acquire and improve their literacy skills necessary to become self-sufficient and to participate effectively as productive workers, family members, and citizens. Programs include: daytime and Saturday morning Basic Skills and GED Preparation and daytime and evening English as a Second Language classes.

Registration Information: 

  • Enrollment is ongoing 
  • New students may register on Tuesdays 
  • Minimum age to participate is 16 
  • Parent/ guardian consent to participate is required for persons under age 18 
  • Principal / superintendent secondary education program certification of non-enrollment is required if you are under age 22 
  • There is a non-refundable registration and testing fee of $10 due upon enrollment. Students unable to pay the fee should complete a waiver form. 
  • A placement test is required to determine eligibility 

Program Outcomes 

Adult Basic Education addresses a variety of learner goals. ABE helps learners to: 

  • Achieve high school equivalency (GED) 
  • Attain skills necessary to enter post-secondary education and training 
  • Learn to speak and write the English language 
  • Master basic academic skills to help their children succeed in school 
  • Become U.S. citizens and participate in democratic society 
  • Gain self-esteem, personal confidence and sense of personal and civic responsibility
