ESC
Schools- Spring 2009
State testing held students at the ESC Schools captive
during the months of March and April. HSPA and GEPA
testing took place at Tewksbury and West Amwell. APA’s
and SRA’s were also completed during the month of
March.
Professional Development opportunities occurred during
the month of March included reviewing the new Core
Content Standards for Language Arts. Staff were introduced
to the new standards that are out for public comment.
Staff was encouraged to begin using the standards
as a way to enhance their lesson plans and to start
implementing the standards to see how user friendly
they are. Writing IEP’s and updating IEP’s were part
of additional professional development activities.
Students attended field trip activities at Bridgewater
Sports Arena and went both ice skating and played
Lazer Tag. Project Use staff members came out to Tewksbury
and led students again in team building activities.
Students from both programs were able to integrate
the skills of team building, confidence building and
working to solve problems. Students at both campuses
are involved in creating gardens this year. The students
in the Alternative Program at Tewksbury have worked
with Dennis Cox and planting 500 heads of lettuce.
Mr. Cox worked the plants from seeds and the students
are avidly turning the gardens over.
Currently there are 15 students participating in the
Structured Learning Experiences as part of the HCESC
Work Program. Many of these employment places are
in Lambertville and Flemington. Teacher Mary Gaspari
is out at worksites every week to follow both special
education and alternative students from both schools.
John Gaddy has started the karate program with students
at West Amwell. Students will begin to focus character
education activities through the karate program. Activities
will be integrated into the classrooms. Mark Roxey
and Roxey Ballet dancers have continued to work with
students and staff at ESC School at West Amwell. Principal
Lou Johnson and Schools Director Andrea Romano met
with them to discuss expansion of the program for
the next school year.
Summer School has been planned for Franklin, Somerset
County and at ESC School at West Amwell. Both remedial
summer school activities and enrichment classes in
Algebra 1 are being planned.
